Learning To Row At Derby

We have introduced Learn to Row courses at Derby. These are aimed at new members that are novices to our sport, this course will teach you the basics of the sport of rowing in a safe environment.

The Learn To Row Course

The courses will run as soon as there are sufficient people to do so, this will usually be four or more. The course will take place over a 6 week period and act as an introduction to rowing and the club.
There will be a charge of £60.00 for the course, which should you decide to join the club, will be deducted from your first years membership

Novice Rowing

Rowing times for novices change with the clocks. In the winter months rowing on the water is restricted to weekends only for novices plus one or two nights indoor rowing. As the evenings get longer we then row on Tuesday and Thursday on the water.

What To Wear

At first you will not be doing a lot of work so wear warm tight fitting cloths in layers for the winter with a warm hat and leggings, In the summer light tight fitting cloths of at least two layers, a hat and hopefully some sun cream/block.

Racing And Competing

Derby Rowing Club competes at race meetings called Regattas around the UK. These races vary in distance from 500 metres up to 2000 metres. We also compete in long distance races, which are called Heads which take place in the winter months with the last one of the winter being the London Head of the River. This race is the same course as the Oxford and Cambridge boat race but from Mortlake to Putney

Training Camps

We have recently started having training camps in Europe & UK around the Easter holiday time. These camps are aimed at senior rowers who are competing at the higher levels for the coming season. We also have training weekends which are aimed at all levels within the club.

Water Safety

Derby Rowing Club follow the rules of the Amateur Rowing Association Water Safety Code .We also have local river rules for the River Derwent on which we row

All rowers must be competent swimmers able to swim at least 50 meters in light clothing and we may test this at a local swimming pool.

All new active members must attend a boat and river safety session before the course starts.

Capsize drills are held regularly and all rowers must complete this, it will teach you what to do if you fall out of a boat

What Can I Expect To Pay

The membership cost for a single adult is £252.00 per year
