DERBY ROWING CLUB
Learn to row (Junior)

Water Safety At Derby Rowing Club

DRC follow the rules of the Amateur Rowing Association Water Safety Code We also have local river rules for the river Derwent on which we row

All rowers must be competent swimmers and be able to swim at least 50 meters in light clothing. This may be tested at a local swimming pool.

All new active members must attend a boat and river safety session before they will be allowed to participate in the sport and entered onto a Start to Row course

Capsize drills are held regularly and all rowers must complete this drill. It will teach your child what to do if they ever fall out of the boat

What to wear
At first juniors will not be doing a lot of work as we will be concentrating on teaching them the basics of rowing and technique, so in winter they will need to wear layers of tight fitting clothes, leggings and a warm hat. On warmer days they should still wear tight fitting cloths of at least two layers and a sun hat and sun cream

Racing And Competing
Derby Rowing Club compete at race meetings called regattas during the summer months and travel all around the UK. The races will vary in distance from 500 metres up to 2000 metres.
We also compete, generally between September and April, in long distance races which are called Heads, these can be up to 6000 metres
Regattas and Heads often offer event for Juniors and these will be in different age groups .We ask that parents /guardians accompany their children to these events particularly as some of the Regattas are over both days at the weekend which obviously means an overnight stay

Training Camps
We have recently started undertaking training camps
These camps are aimed at senior rowers and juniors who can plan their time in order to attend at this important time in the academic year.
All juniors must be accompanied by a parent / guardian on any overnight stay. There are additional costs associated with the training camps

What can you expect to pay
The junior induction course will cost £30.00 for the first three months, if you wish to join the club this will be deducted from the first years membership.
The Junior membership is £75.00 per annum up to the age of 18 years
Other costs will be incurred should you wish to race in competitions, this will be the cost of the race entry fee which can be between £6.00 and £10.00 plus an amount for the travel costs associated with taking the boats to the regatta (trailer fees) which is a fixed cost of £7.00 per regatta
